- Sikes Garris was captured by British in the Battle of Charleston, SouthCarolina. Made to haul supplies from England to Charleston for six years,then escaped. Was later made War Minister. Later moved to Kentucky.
He served in 10th regiment of North Carolina under Captain Hennessy ofKingston, NC and then marched northward and was put under the command ofCapt. Coleman, then marched to Point until the British marched toWestPoint River under General George Washington then marched byPhiladelphia, PA then marched on foot for Charleston, SC as the weatherwas cold and the river frozen. He arrived at Charleston before theBritish attack and was there during the battle when Charleston was seizedhe was captured. The siege lasted 40 days. The captain of the ship gavehim three choices. (1) Enlist in the British Land Service. (2) Goonshore and side with England (3) Remain on board ship and be a sailorfor five years, to which he accepted.
He sailed on the borders of England for some time then to the FrenchIndies Islands and from there to New York.
Betsy Garris personally appeared in court and made an oath that BenjaminGarris, her late husband, enlisted in the State of North Carolina toserve three years and that shortly after he enlisted his son Sikes Garristook his place and that his son, Sikes Garris was gone from home aboutsix years.
Central Kentucky was opened for Revolutionary War Veterans andSikesGarris went to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky where he raised Jenny'sand Jacks for the coal miners.
