- Not long after William Bowman Hibbard moved to East Troy, Wisconsin (in 1836), about thirty miles from the port of Milwaukee, he proposed marriage to Adaline, whom he knew from his hometown of Hadley, MA. His proposal was greeted with such lack of enthusiasm by her father, Horace Smith, that the wedding took place without his immediate blessing on April 10, 1838, in Racine, WI, twenty miles or so away. Very soon, however, peace prevailed. Another log house was built, a large farm hewed out and William became head of his own family. Here two daughters were born.
