Notes |
- William, after moving to East Troy, Wisconsin in 1836 and marrying Adaline in 1838, made frequent trips to Milwaukee as a leader of small caravans loaded with produce from the surrounding farms. It apparently attracted him to that growing city and he became a so-called "early settler" of Milwaukee in 1843. His continued dealings in products of the near-by country extended to receiving and shipping coal and lumber by lake transport - and soon to ownership in vessels, pioneering in plank roads and the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad, the first to be extended westward in the state. Here William lived for nearly fifty years in well-earned prosperity, with the varied ups and downs incident to the times, as a leading citizen, prominent in civic and national activities, and head of a family of six.

- Not long after William Bowman Hibbard moved to East Troy, Wisconsin (in 1836), about thirty miles from the port of Milwaukee, he proposed marriage to Adaline, whom he knew from his hometown of Hadley, MA. His proposal was greeted with such lack of enthusiasm by her father, Horace Smith, that the wedding took place without his immediate blessing on April 10, 1838, in Racine, WI, twenty miles or so away. Very soon, however, peace prevailed. Another log house was built, a large farm hewed out and William became head of his own family. Here two daughters were born.
