Lillian Bertha Grewie was born July 12, 1911 in Houston, Texas. When Lillian was four years old, her parents died and she was raised by the Bates family.
She married Rev. Jordan Carl "Jessie" J.C. Hibbard, Sr. in 1927. They both loved to dance and won several prizes for their dancing. Soon after their marriage, J.C. became a Christian. God began to deal with him to become a preacher of the Word of God, but J.C. was hesitant. He had always said, "There are two things I don't want to be, and both of them are a preacher."
When their first daughter, June Marie was born, she became ill with double bronchial pneumonia. After a while of soul-searching and prayer, J.C. told God that if He would heal June Marie that he would obey His call for him to preach. June was healed and J.C. started preaching. J.C. and Lillian had a good marriage for many years and three children were born to them, June Marie Hibbard, Rev. J.C. Hibbard, Jr. and Dolores"Dee" Hibbard.
Rev. J.C. Hibbard, Sr. pastored in several places throughout Texas. God finally led him to Dallas where he founded and became pastor of the Oak Cliff Assembly Of God Church after a revival in Dallas by Amie Simple McPhearson where many people had made decisions to follow Jesus. J.C.worked and sacrificed, but found little time for anything but his ministry. Lillian had problems with this and other stresses of his ministry and it eventually caused a split in their marriage in 1938.
Lillian married Lawrence Edgar "Larry" Ash February 5, 1943. He was a General Construction Superintendent with Foster-Wheeler Corporation and they moved to several locations worldwide during their marriage including England. They eventually settled in Downey, California and then later, after Larry retired, they purchased and managed a ski resort in Big Bear Lake, California called The Woodland Lodge. It consisted of log cabin cottages where guests stayed during visits to the ski areas of Big BearLake.
Lillian was an extremely "classy" lady who loved sports cars and drove a Jaguar convertible through the mountain roads of Big Bear at high speeds. She was a terrific host and cook and had a high regard for proper etiquette, including perfect dinner table settings for her family and quests.
They didn't own a television set. She said it was better to read a book or sew than to watch TV. However, since she and Larry were both avid baseball fans, they listened to various games on the radio regularly.
Larry died March 30, 1964 and Lillian moved to Dallas, Texas where she worked in the banking industry. Later, she met and married Don Clark. They lived in South Texas for many years. Lillian died in 1973 and is buried in South Texas.
