- Was born in Detroit on site of Old City Hall. Birth date was always thought to be 25 December 1856, Detroit News, 25 December 1943, "Town Talk" by George Stark gives date as 25 Dec. 1856. He was not on the 1860 Census. He always said he was 12 years old when his father died in 1872, Letters from his sisters in Oldenburg, IN confirms the date as 25 Dec, 1860.
At 16 he was a foreman at John Kengels Carriage Works in Detroit. Was a partner in the Sanger Steam Laundry at 13 East Jefferson in Detroit. He was injured in a horse breaking cart accident, and was on crutches for 5 years. During part of this time he was Bailiff for the Federal Court. He bought Cherry Island near Rockwood, MI. about 1890. Was the owner and developer of the Cherry Island Subdivision. Operated duck hunting club, rented boats, was deputy sheriff, and a friend of Henry Ford, and many Great Lakes Ship captains.

Was a good friend of Henry Ford. Henry Ford would visit him on Cherry Island.
On Monday 29 April 1946 he went to the Builders Show in Detroit. He got off the bus on Fort Street near Walnut and walked about 2 blocks to 2424 22nd Street, Wyandotte. He stopped in the back yard and talked to a neighbor. It was a bright sunny spring afternoon. He entered the side grade door and accidently put his left foot on the top step and fell down the stairs and broke his neck. He was unconscious and died 32 hours later in Wyandotte General Hospital.
